What the UBS headlines are obscuring: the US wealth playbook has become the dominant model in Swiss private banking, arriving through three different doors — JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and Julius Baer's new CEO.
Everyone is asking if the money is leaving the Gulf. The better question is which bankers are positioned to keep it, win it, or lose it. Inside the Saudization rules, the Dubai hiring bar, and what Swiss banks are doing on both sides of the border.
Everyone in private banking is asking the same question right now: is the money leaving the Gulf? Wrong question. The right one is: which bankers are actually positioned to keep it, win it, or lose it, depending on which side of this conversation they sit on.
Here's the backdrop most of you already feel but haven't seen quantified. The US-Israel-Iran conflict and the disruption to the Strait of Hormuz triggered one of the most severe energy supply shocks in recent history. S&P Global has floated a scenario in which Gulf banks could face domestic deposit outflows of up to $307 billion, and a 50% rise in distressed loans across the region's 45 largest banks could wipe out more than half their annual net income. That is not background noise. That is the conversation happening in every risk committee from Riyadh to DIFC.
And yet, in the same breath: net FDI inflows into Saudi Arabia rose 34.5% year on year in Q3 2025. The UAE absorbed the largest millionaire inflow in the world last year, just under 9,800 new arrivals, while Saudi Arabia ranked fifth globally with 2,400. Gulf sovereign wealth funds, sitting on more than $5 trillion combined, are not retreating, they are recalibrating, shifting from being the world's LP toward shoring up their own economies first. IMF projections from April still show positive growth for Saudi Arabia and the UAE this year.
So both things are true at once. Headline risk is real and immediate. Structural pull is real and durable. The bankers who win in this environment are the ones who can hold both truths in their head at the same time, and explain them calmly to a client who is reading the same headlines you are.
Saudi Arabia: the gate is narrower, and it's mostly local
If you're building a career in Saudi private banking right now, understand the rules of the game first. Saudization is not a talking point, it is the operating system. Senior private banking roles, particularly anything titled Director or above, are increasingly reserved for Saudi nationals. International candidates without a Saudi passport are not competing on merit alone anymore, they are competing against a quota.
This is reshaping who gets hired and why. Saudi Awwal Bank's private banking division grew deposits 14% in the first nine months of last year, with almost 80% of clients investing through its in-house platform, evidence that local infrastructure and local relationship managers are now driving the growth, not expat hires parachuted in from London or Geneva.
What does the local money actually want? Three things, consistently. First, Shariah-compliant structures are no longer a niche request, they are a baseline expectation for a large share of the client base. Second, succession and family business continuity dominate the conversation, this is a market where a huge share of HNW wealth sits inside operating family businesses, and the banker who can speak intelligently about governance, succession, and generational transfer earns trust faster than the one pitching structured notes. Third, alignment with Vision 2030 matters more than people in Geneva realize, clients want to know their banker understands where the Kingdom is going, not just where the oil price is today.
The banker who struggles here is the one who treats Saudi the way they'd treat Geneva twenty years ago: relationship first, product second, compliance as an afterthought. That model is dead on arrival in a market where the regulator, the client, and the hiring quota are all watching the same thing, your nationality and your local credibility.
Dubai: still the open door, and still the booking center that matters
Dubai remains a different animal entirely, and this is precisely why it continues to anchor UHNW and HNW coverage across the GCC, Levant, Africa, and India. It is the booking and advisory hub for MEA, full stop, and nothing about the current conflict has changed that geography.
Swiss banks aren't pulling out, and that itself is a signal worth reading. Even as Iran's rhetoric escalated in March, UBS, Pictet, EFG, Lombard Odier, Julius Baer, and UBP all kept their regional operations running, the response was remote work precautions, not evacuations. UBP is a useful case study in how the two markets actually relate to each other. Its Dubai office has been the bank's MEA platform for over two decades, but the current growth push is freshly led, Arfat Qayyum, a former Credit Suisse Qatar CEO, took over as Senior Executive Officer in August 2025 and has since built out the team running more than 40 professionals managing over CHF15 billion in regional assets, including a February 2026 hire of Fahd Iqbal, UBS's former CIO Middle East, as head of investment services. In late 2025, UBP also opened a separate Riyadh office, and tellingly, put a Saudi national, Mishal Alhawas, in as CEO and Head of Advising, explicitly framed around Vision 2030 alignment. Same bank, same MEA leadership, two different staffing logics. Dubai is where you build an international, multilingual team. Riyadh is where the person running the show needs to be Saudi. Lombard Odier has made a comparable bet from the Dubai side, securing a DIFC license and committing to double its UAE headcount within three years. For RMs reading the market, the message is consistent: Swiss private banks are not retreating mid-crisis, they're expanding, and they're doing so with very different hiring rules depending on which side of the Saudi-UAE border the office sits.
What has changed is the bar. Mandates we're seeing prioritize relationship managers and team heads who bring portable books with proven revenue and a genuinely strong compliance culture, not just a Rolodex. Banks and EAMs are calibrating hard on booking options, credit appetite, and product shelf, particularly Lombard lending, private markets, and real estate financing, because business plans built on optimism rather than realistic wallet share don't survive a market where deposit stability is suddenly a board-level topic.
Language remains the differentiator that nobody outside the region fully appreciates. Arabic and English are table stakes. French, Hindi, and Urdu, depending on the desk, are what separate a banker who can cover the GCC, Levant, Africa, and India corridor from one who can only cover the easy half of it. If you're a senior RM with a portable book and you speak three of those languages, you are, right now, one of the more sought-after profiles in the market, conflict or no conflict.
The profile that wins, and the one that doesn't
Put the two markets side by side and a pattern emerges. The banker who thrives in 2026 is credible under pressure, can sit across from a client who just read about $307 billion in potential deposit outflows and explain, calmly and accurately, why their bank and their structure are sound. They have local language, local relationships, and in Saudi's case increasingly local nationality. They understand that compliance is not friction, it is the product, especially when capital is moving and everyone is asking harder questions about where it's going and why.
The banker who struggles is the pure product pusher, the one whose pitch was built for a calmer market and hasn't been updated. No Arabic, no Hindi, no Urdu, no real GCC network beyond a handful of expat contacts. No fluency in Shariah-compliant structures or succession planning. And critically, no answer ready for the client who asks, directly, "is my money safe here right now." If your business plan doesn't address that question, it isn't a business plan anymore, it's a wish list.
The longer game
Here's the uncomfortable truth for anyone hiring or being hired into the region right now. This conflict will pass, conflicts in this region always do, but the banks, the regulators, and the clients who lived through it will remember who showed up with answers and who showed up with a pitch deck from 2023. Saudi Arabia is going to keep localizing senior roles. Dubai is going to keep rewarding portability and language depth. Both trends were true before the war, and both are now accelerating because of it.
