Why Monaco is Europe's most concentrated private banking hub

Monaco is built entirely around private banking and wealth management, with no meaningful retail banking sector. Seventeen banks currently operate in the Principality, down from twenty four a decade ago, and the six largest, led by Barclays, CMB Monaco and UBS Monaco, hold roughly three quarters of total banking assets. Foreign owned institutions control more than 99 percent of the market, serving an international UHNW client base that spans traditional European wealth and a growing Gulf and Middle East segment.

Over the last two years, hiring demand in Monaco has concentrated on:

• Senior Compliance Officers with direct AMSF filing experience across AML/CFT, sanctions and regulatory reporting
• Candidates combining FATCA/CRS ownership with market abuse surveillance and cross-border expertise
• Senior RMs with genuinely portable books and multilingual client coverage
• Candidates comfortable with Monaco's compliance-intensive onboarding process, typically one to three months

Monaco's grey list exit process, ongoing since the FATF's June 2024 listing, remains the single largest driver of compliance hiring in the Principality. As of the June 2026 FATF plenary, Monaco has received an initial determination that its action plan is substantially complete, with a confirming on-site assessment still pending.
